Thermal Swing Evaluation of Thermal Spray Coatings for Internal Combustion Engines

The efficiency of internal combustion engines is gaining increased interest due to the impact fuel consumption on greenhouse gas emissions and goals countries minimize emissions. Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) have shown great potential in improving engines. TBCs, applied surface piston, apart from thermal isolation, should also follow temperature variations chamber, reducing energy loss not affecting volumetric efficiency, thus accomplish a raise efficiency. This characteristic TBC can be associated with properties, but best performance test for TBCs single cylinder engine test. an expensive time demanding procedure, making it easily accessible. purpose this work was develop swing method evaluate applicability chamber engine. carried out by measuring variation coating (thermal response) exposed heat pulses high velocity air (HVAF) spray torch. were tested as sprayed (AS) after grinding them reduce roughness (RR) order ensure similar thickness along different TBCs. Characterization microstructure scanning electron microscopy (SEM) together image analysis techniques, properties measured laser flash (LFA). By correlating response coatings, determined that large open pores exhibited highest response, which 200 °C.
